Elza Walker was initially conceived as the lead character for the canceled Resident Evil 1.5, the original prototype of Resident Evil 2. A 19-year-old college student and motorcycle racer, Elza was designed to be a strong, independent female protagonist. Her character was eventually reimagined into Claire Redfield, who became the final protagonist in Resident Evil 2.
Character designer Isao Ōishi favored Elza's racing suit design over his design for Claire Redfield. Ōishi also noted that Elza was not considered a unique character by the development team but rather a prototype of Claire Redfield. Additionally, Elza's original name was Rachel Speyer.
In the Resident Evil 2 remake, players can unlock an Elza Walker skin for Claire Redfield, allowing fans to experience the original character's design within the updated game.
Elza was depicted with light blonde hair tied into a ponytail and blue eyes. Her outfit consisted of a full-body Raccoon University racing suit, black gloves, and black boots. Over time, her design evolved, incorporating blue and yellow accents along the sleeves and a looser ponytail with her bangs let down.
