Behind the find
In the first Resident Evil, magneto-optical disks become key items in Umbrella's underground laboratory. Using three disks at separate terminals provides the security codes needed to open a prison cell. The optional search can decide whether another survivor gets out of the facility.
The disks belong to a world of terminals, restricted doors and physical media. They make Umbrella's security system part of the escape rather than background decoration. Carrying them through the laboratory also means giving precious inventory space to the possibility of rescuing someone.
